Chillingham Community Association
The Chillingham Community Association (CCA) was formed and
continues to operate through the voluntary efforts of many members of
the local community. Key core values that were incorporated into the association from the beginning were: "all work for community benefit and not for personal financial gain", respect for others and integrity
in the personal dealings of members with each other and with the wider
community. The CCA is based at the Chillingham Community Centre in
Numinbah Road, Chillingham, which is open five days a week. Our primary
aim is to enrich the local community . There are a number of regular
activities carried out at the centre including art group, knitting, choir,
bookclub, community vegetable garden and regeneration of the natural
environment. You can participate in any of these activities for a
nominal charge of $2.00. We also run a free Christmas party in early
December for the children of our Community and members of the Community
Association help to ensure that Santa can attend the Chillingham School
and Chillingham PreSchool Christmas celebrations. We are also able to
put you in contact with local Bellydancing classes and local
bushwalking groups if you are interested in those activities. If you
would like to join our Community Association or to contribute to our
Community Centre, please contact us through our "contact us" link You
are also welcome to attend our monthly meetings at the Community Centre
on the first Saturday of each month starting at 2.00pm.
Got a good idea for the Community Centre?
If you think you've got a good idea for the centre and would
like to get the CCA committee to do something about it, this is what
you should do:
1. Talk to as many CCA members, volunteers and committee members as you can about it
2. Ask for your idea to be put on the agenda for the next committee meeting (first Saturday of month)
3. Come along to the committee meeting and explain your idea
4. The committee cannot do everything that members want it to
but tries its best. Remember, the committee members have an ethical and
legal responsibility to closely oversee all projects that run at the
centre to ensure that monies spent are properly accounted for.
Sometimes, even good ideas cannot be taken up as the time of the
committee members is already fully occupied.
5. If you attend meetings regularly, assist in community
fundraising ventures and demonstrate in your dealings with CCA members
and members of the wider community that you behave ethically and with
integrity, there is a far greater chance that your ideas will be
adopted.
Local Economy
The Chillingham community is very diverse with people earning a
living from a variety of sources. Farming is still a very important
part of the local economy with the production of beef, dairy, bananas,
vegetables, fruits and much more still ongoing in the district. Much of
this produce can be obtained from local roadside stalls, where you pay
on an honor system.
Beantree Walk
Chillingham's Beantree Walk showcases many craftspeople including
potters, a candle maker, a soap maker, a wood turner and a musical
instrument maker.
- Banana Cabana
- Chillingham Store
- Bushtucker Gardens
- Butcher Shop Pottery
- Candlemaker - These exquisite candles are individually
hand-carved from pure paraffin wax by candle maker John Commerford.
Finished superbly in a natural gum-based glaze, they make an ideal gift
or centre piece for that special occasion.
Being an art form as much as they are functional, only the highest
quality raw materials are used - as such the colorants are guaranteed
not to fade or discolour.
They are extremely long burning - a special feature being the subtle
glow which emanates through the translucent core when lit (this can be
accentuated by burning the candle in darkness with no other light
source).
Enjoy the natural beauty and charm of burning these unique candles!
- Local Park
- Fire Brigade
- Flute Workshop - Chillingham Flute Workshop is home to local
colorful flute-maker, piano tuner and general
instrument-tinkerer/repairman, Milton. The flute workshop is packed
with a wide range of instruments and the tools needed for their
construction, maintenance and repair. .
